Kavade Shastra: How Cowrie Shell Prashna Works

By the Kavade & Jyothishya Reader team · Published 20 October 2026

Kavade Shastra (ಕವಡೆ ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರ) is a form of Prashna, or horary astrology, practised in Karnataka, Kerala and across South India. Instead of a birth chart, the astrologer answers a question from the moment it is asked, using consecrated cowrie shells (kavade). This guide explains how a traditional reading works, so you know what is happening when you ask a question.

What is Prashna, and why cowrie shells?

In Prashna Jyotisha the question itself is treated as a birth. The moment a sincere question is asked is believed to carry its answer. Many people do not know their exact birth time, so Prashna gives them a way to ask about a specific matter: a job offer, a marriage proposal, a lost object, a court case or a health worry.

Cowrie shells have been used for centuries in South Indian temples and homes. They are counted, cast and read for the number of shells taken and for whether each shell lands open or closed. Traditional practitioners keep the shells near the family deity and energise them with mantra before use.

The shells: 108 for a full Prashna, fewer for quick questions

Step 1: Find the Arudha Rashi

The number of shells taken decides the Arudha Rashi, the sign that becomes the first house of the question chart.

  1. Count the shells taken.
  2. Divide by 12 and keep the remainder.
  3. Remainder 1 = Mesha (Aries), 2 = Vrishabha (Taurus), and so on to 11 = Kumbha (Aquarius). A remainder of 0 means Meena (Pisces).

Example: 41 shells ÷ 12 = 3, remainder 5. The Arudha is the 5th sign, Simha (Leo). Leo is linked with authority and government, so the answer often involves a senior person or an official decision.

Arudha RashiTraditional tone of the answer
Mesha (Aries)Quick action, courage; results come fast
Vrishabha (Taurus)Slow, steady, material matters and money
Mithuna (Gemini)Mixed signals; talk and negotiate
Karka (Cancer)Emotional; family and home are involved
Simha (Leo)Authority, government, a senior person decides
Kanya (Virgo)Detailed effort, paperwork or health
Tula (Libra)Partnerships, balance, agreements
Vrischika (Scorpio)Hidden factors; change after a struggle
Dhanus (Sagittarius)Faith, teachers, long journeys
Makara (Capricorn)Delay, then success through discipline
Kumbha (Aquarius)Unexpected or unconventional turn
Meena (Pisces)The situation is still unclear; be patient

Step 2: Count the houses from the Arudha

Once the Arudha is fixed, the houses are counted from it like a birth chart. Two houses matter most:

Benefic planets (Jupiter, Venus, a waxing Moon) well placed in these houses support a favourable result. Malefics (Saturn, Rahu, Ketu, Mars) in the Arudha or the 8th from it point to obstacles. The astrologer then looks for remedies (parihara).

Step 3: Read open and closed shells

Each cowrie has a slit "mouth" side and a rounded "back". When shells are cast:

With a set of nine shells, the number that land open is read like this:

Open shells (of 9)Meaning
9Divine blessing; full success
8Very good
7Good
6Moderate; effort is needed
5Mixed or balanced
4Slightly unfavourable
3Significant challenges; seek remedies
2Major obstacles
1Extreme difficulty; pray and wait
0Wrong timing; ask again later

Kavade Shastra for career and job questions

Career questions are among the most common. The astrologer looks at the 10th house from the Arudha (work and status) along with the 7th and 11th. A Leo or Capricorn Arudha often means a slow but stable government or corporate outcome. Gemini or Libra usually points to negotiation, so salary talks or a partnership decide the result. A Pisces Arudha usually means the offer is not final yet and the person should wait before resigning from a current job.

Frequently asked questions

Is Kavade Shastra the same as Ashtamangala Prashna?

Both are forms of Prashna. Kerala Ashtamangala Prashna is a larger temple ritual that uses gold, a lamp and other items alongside cowries. Kavade Shastra is the simpler cowrie-only method common in Karnataka homes.

How many shells are used?

108 for a formal Prashna and 9 to 25 for a quick reading. The online tool on this site uses a 9-shell cast for the yes/no result and a full count for the Arudha Rashi.

Can I ask the same question twice?

Tradition advises against asking the same question again on the same day. Wait for circumstances to change or ask on another day.
